My photo story “Windows Into Social Landscapes”, selected by Leica Australia to be published (by Leica) in a photo book has been launched at the Leica Sydney Gallery on 20th February 2026.

The theme for the photo book brought together a small group of photographers, each presenting a story comprising 10 images. World-famous Australian-born street photographer Jesse Marlow was the project art director.

This is my second photo book published by Leica. The first titled “TIME AND PLACE” that included my photo story “Reflection and Imagination: 10 Stories Through the Glass” was published in 2024.

Centred around social observations, my stories explored moments, colours, reflections, shadows and movements in and out of the city.

This project goes beyond the images, introducing all facets involved in creating a photo book namely editing, sequencing, design, reviewing and printing. It reveals the intricacies involved in hand-crafting a book. Consistent with Leica’s classic, minimalist style, the book focuses on each photographer’s images only with no text to distract.

It is a great opportunity to be associated (albeit in a small way) with such a prestigious name. Many of the greatest world photographers since the 1930s have been shooting with Leica and the symbiotic relationship created then is still well in force today.

About Jean Bogais

SOCIOLOGIST & PHOTOGRAPHER

Jean Bogais is a Paris-Sorbonne educated sociologist (Doctorate), and Social & Intercultural Psychologist whose principal area of academic and professional interests have been (political) violence. He has a considerable experience working on-the-ground as a foreign correspondent, a UN investigator/negotiator, and also as a specialist teaching academic (professor level.) His practical experience comprises stays in North Africa and many years (25+) in Southeast Asia.

Jean is also a passionate photographer, capturing societal themes through his lens. His photography reflects his deep engagement with the complexities of the human experience, blending his insights with a visual narrative that explores the interplay between society and the environment.

His fascination with adventure started as a teenager. He has been a dedicated ocean sailor throughout his life, completing a round-the-world solo journey among other significant adventure projects. His passion for sailing started as a teenager, at the same time as his passion for photography.
